Time for Sharp Release of the Film Service Voddler

Film Services Voddler has signed an agreement with Disney and Paramount. On Wednesday is the debut of the service described as "a Spotify for movies".

Four years after its inception, it is finally time for a sharp release of the film service Voddler. The test version that was released this summer in collaboration with Bredbandsbolaget attracted 30,000 users. On Wednesday hit Bredbandsbolaget its doors wide open and offers Voddler to all its 500,000 customers.

- We believe that around half are biting on this, "says Marcus Bäcklund, president of Voddler.

He added that 250,000 people are Voddlers own queue and waiting to get access to free service.

- They will also be invited the next few months, "he says.

 

That the launch takes place on Wednesday because it had just signed an agreement with Nordic film giants Paramount (which has a contract with DreamWorks) and Disney (which owns Touchstone Pictures and Miramax).

- We are very close to signing with Sony Pictures and think that all the major film studios are on board before the end of the year, says CEO Marcus Bäcklund, which IT acid was president of Internet consulting company Cell Network.

The idea of Voddler is to offer a wide range of films, television programs and music for free online. To avoid legal problems loading movies are not downloaded, but "passed over" by the computer. Voddler make money on advertising, which is the beginning of movies. It also takes charge of new films. Costs are kept down when users' computers are included in the distribution network, a sort of controlled and legal version of peer-to-peer technology used by file-sharing sites like Pirate Bay.

- This reduces costs by 95 percent. Each individual flow is profitable, "says Marcus Bäcklund who believe the company can reach 700,000 users and a positive gross profit already this summer.

The business model is similar to that of the Swedish music service Spotify uses. But so far it is a long way Voddler achieved the same success. Today there are nearly 1000 films to the service. There are fewer than for competing services SF Anytime and film2home. Further, most "new" movies already out on DVD.

The goal is to Voddler should be in all the Nordic countries for the summer. Then there is the United Kingdom to be captured. In parallel to the supply to grow.

- Our goal is to become a new Swedish international firms. We will do everything we can to achieve that goal, says Marcus Bäcklund.
